Let me ask you a question: Have you ever felt alienated amidst your very own friends or your very own family? In that case, you may be an individual, something which seems quite rare these days. Being an individual does not mean merely being a person, but being your own person, with your own, unique persona.
If, by any chance, you would happen to be one of the few remaining specimen of that species, you contribute originality and diversity to a society in desperate need of it. Though people claim that our society is rapidly evolving, I am one of the few true misanthropists who sincerely believe it to be devolving.
In a society, both ethnic and social diversity is of utmost importance, and through thorough deduction I have reached the conclusion that any variation and diversity is the very cornerstone of our civilization. When people from other cultures arrive this petty country, our values and sense of morality may surprise them, and I can’t say I blame them. This society has reached the peak of technology and welfare, but that development has not come without a price. In the midst of our bliss we seem to have forgotten the very essence of humanity, which is that sympathy and genuine concern for our fellow man.
I won’t say that all the inhabitants of this peculiar society share that complete lack of values, for there is no rule with exceptions, but I believe this attitude to be more common than most of us want to admit. The ethnocentrism is spreading amongst our people like a virus, and those who are infected seem to believe there is only one way to live life and view the world. The cure for this virus is diversity of any kind, and by listening to people who are different from ourselves, we may actually learn a thing or two about the world and our civilization as a whole. Arrogance and narcissism never did anyone any good. To become wiser than we are, we must turn our eyes away from the mirror, and gaze out towards the world, for it is there true wisdom awaits.
One concern I do have regarding the increasing ethnic diversity in our society, is the ongoing war that seems to rage between some of the various ethnicities. Though most cultures are peaceful at the core of their hearts, there are always those who find a way to abuse our hospitality. Anyone with a sense of right and wrong knows that you don’t burst into your neighbour’s house and wreck it. Luckily most guests don’t tend to do that.
So what am I getting at here? Am I just rambling on senselessly about a topic which doesn’t concern you the least? In that case, you may want to consider revaluating the degree of your tolerance. All I am trying to explain is that there is no definite truth, but several truths. The more of these truths we know, the wiser we may claim to be. Only when we know what there is to know, may we evaluate the various truths and find the one that suits us the best. Wisdom is the cure for indifference and ignorance, so let us spread the cure and not the virus. Only by being the change we want to see in the world, may we change it. And in the words of the Manic Street Preachers: "If you tolerate this, then your children will be next."
